Hybridization is not hereditary modification and there are licensed natural hybrid varieties available for purchase. While there is absolutely nothing inherently incorrect with hybridized varieties, we tend to steer clear of them.

Open pollinated seeds are simply that they're allowed to pollinate naturally. This might be exposed air by wind, bees, butterflies or other pollinators, or perhaps birds and people.
When saving for future gardens, be sure that the plant was not allowed to cross pollinate with other ranges as the seed produced may well be a hybrid variety, even though it was developed with natural means. Treasure ranges are some of our favorites. To be labeled heirloom a variety should be at least 50 years old and either open pollinated or self pollinated.
